Fiery Trial
This summer has witnessed unprecedented temperatures in several
states of America. Fierce fires destroyed nearly seven million
acres and many were still burning as autumn arrived. Elsewhere
floods and typhoons have caused thousands of deaths and made
millions homeless. Few think to link such 'natural disasters' with
the judgment of God on those who have spurned His Laws.
["For the LORD will come with fire ...to render his anger with fury and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by his sword the LORD will judge all flesh." Isaiah 66:15-16]
Secular Israel
The religious leadership in Israel is vocally opposing Prime
Minister Ehud Barak's current drive to 'secularize' the nation. He
is seeking to allow Sabbath flights by the national airline,
allowing businesses to open in Jerusalem, licensing non-kosher food
outlets etc. He has also ordered closure of the Ministry of
Religious Affairs, distributing its functions to other secular
ministries.
[Nehemiah contended with similar activity: "What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? Did not you fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on as and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath. Nehemiah 13:15-18]
Rome as "Mother"
A Roman Catholic theologian, in a document Dominus
Jesus, has with papal approval re-emphasized the supremacy of
the Roman Church. No longer may other churches be seen as 'sister
churches', of Rome and that their order of ministries are
'deficient'. They must view Rome as 'the mother church.' Cardinal
Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) has also caused furor by declaring that the Church
of Rome is 'waiting for the moment' when the Jews will embrace
Christianity.

Drought in Israel
Israel's continuing internal troubles are being compounded by a
serious shortage of water. The level of the Sea of Galilee is
213.08m below sea-level (end of November) - 8cm below the 'red
line' long ago set as the danger level below which the Sea cannot
replenish itself. Replenishment of the Sea from the head waters has
decreased in recent years, while water consumption has markedly
increased. Serious permanent environmental damage is feared.

European Army
Javier Solan, former NATO chief, is the new EU
representative for foreign affairs responsible for developing a
pan-European defence and security policy. Steps towards a new
European army were to be proposed at the inter-governmental

European Superstate
A report commissioned by Romano Prodi, President of the EU
Commission, promotes what amounts to a full-blown Government of
Europe. It is seen as a blueprint for a United States of Europe,
leaving national governments marginalised. Prodi's vision is that
the Commission become the unelected government of a European
superstate, with himself as the President of Europe.

World Peace Summit
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the head of CNN Ted Turner
are promoting a forum of religious leaders to work with the United
Nations in its peacekeeping effort. Reports the Sunday
Telegraph:
"The UN is to extend its peacekeeping role into spiritual territory next [August] by hosting its first summit for world religious leaders". Invited are the Pope, the Archbishop of Canterbury, various Islamic leaders, Israel's Chief Rabbi and others. It's hoped the 'Millennium World Peace Summit' will encourage faiths to bury ancient enmities, and co-operate in resolving world conflicts. A spokesman for the Archbishop of Canterbury said: "It has the potential to be a very significant event, not only by bringing. world religious leaders together in a common cause, but also by bringing them into an encounter with political leaders".

National Moral Purpose?
It is supremely rich that the Prime Minister should have said
that Britain needs to find 'a national moral purpose for young
people. This Government has done nothing to ensure that society's
most moral unit - the family - is upheld, reinforced and encouraged
as the most obvious example to the young..., The Government
includes more than its fair share of adulterers and
others whose personal morality is far from conventional and far
from being a model for a coherent society.... They have failed to
make the connection between the permissive policies they have
followed and the fact that it is now apparently routine for

Intervention by European powers is predicted in Scripture. It may
not be far off. and is already claiming high-level attention in
Brussels [Headquarters of the European Common Market].
Seventh Heaven for Suicide Bombers
Not mentally ill, not fanatical. It is claimed that the suicide
bombers are simply dedicated Muslims. Often from as early as ten
they are indoctrinated with the promise of immediate reward ("The
Seven Rewards") if even one drop of their blood is shed for Islam.

Orthodox Triumph?
The Messianic Jewish publication Maoz (May issue)
reports that the political leadership in Israel favors ascendancy
of the ultra-orthodox haredim. Legislation to come before
the Knesset will ensure only orthodox Jewry - not Conservative or
Reformed - will be officially recognized. Other measures proposed
will outlaw any form of proselytism. This is seen as an attempt
to undermine and eventually ban Christian mission in Israel.
Future Watch
Famed futurologist Arthur C. Clarke ("3001: the final
odyssey") predicts earth's population reduced to one billion
- with the overflow living in space towers connected to earth by
20,000-mile high towers. Education will be by means of a
Braincap through which needed knowledge and skills will be
"poured". Religion will be a thing of the past, outlawed as evil.
"Religion", he says, "is the by-product of fear...it led people
to kill one another over trivial points of doctrine".

Danger From Below
Time reports: "There are explosive mountains in every
part of the world ...volcanoes sputter and steam in places as
diverse as Ecuador and Alaska, Iceland and Indonesia. All told
there are more than 1500 active volcanoes around the globe - 550
or so on land and the rest underwater - that could put the lives
of 500 million people at risk.... Someday one of these mountains
will erupt on a scale many orders of magnitude greater than
mankind has ever seen".

A Third Temple Imminent?
"The birth of a red heifer in Israel is being hailed by religious
Jews as a sign from God that work can soon begin on building the
Third Temple in Jerusalem.... [Born six months ago] the animal is
